But the leading backup application vendors, backup hardware vendors and a handful of startups have evolved their products over the years to meet these new challenges.

Session Descriptions
Session One: Planning and Testing your Backups
In the first section of this seminar, we’ll provide in-depth coverage of these backup technologies:
- Deduplication – Dedupe has revolutionized disk-based backup and can provide substantial cost and operational savings; we’ll detail the alternatives and offer suggestions for “best-fit” implementations
- Virtual Server Data Protection – Virtualized servers have created new problems for storage managers, not the least of which is data protection; traditional backup app deployments may suffice at first, but they rarely scale sufficiently and often make for very awkward recoveries. Backup vendors have tailored their applications to VM environments, but not all backup applications are created equally. This session examines the most important things to look for in a backup application when you need to back up a virtual data center.
- Testing Your Backups – Conventional wisdom dictates testing your backups, but how should the testing process be carried out? We will discuss some low-cost methods for making sure that your backups will be sufficient should the unthinkable happen.
Session Two: A Fresh Look at Evolving Backup Technologies
The second part of the Backup for 2012 seminar will take a fresh look at several technologies that have been around for a while but are now playing a more prominent role in enterprise data protection:
- Cloud Backup – Originally seen as an SMB service, cloud backup is now viable for enterprises. This session will discuss the advantages of using cloud backups, as well as when you will be better off sticking with a more traditional backup method instead. You will also learn what cloud backup features to look for as well as some common pitfalls to watch out for.
- Snapshots – Snapshots have been used for many years to help protect data, but advances in snapshot technologies now make snapshotting a viable alternative to traditional backup methods. Learn how snapshots work, and how the backup vendors are incorporating snapshots in their wares.
- Continuous Data Protection (CDP) – Capturing and saving changes to data as they occur has been around for a while, but it saw little adoption largely because it represented an additional process to manage; today, however, CDP has been incorporated into backup applications and may even suffice on its own in demanding virtualized server environments. This session examines the benefits of CDP technology, but also discusses the crucial task of protecting your backups.
